Our mission is to create safe and inspiring learning opportunities for individuals who wish to pursue the art of writing as a tool for growth and change. We believe in the power of writing to connect people to the deeper parts of themselves and to one another. We believe that creative and conscious communities hold the key to positive transformation in our world. We provide an attentive setting in which every voice is honored, nurtured, and celebrated.

Ours is a non-competitive environment where writers of all abilities are welcome. Our classes, or circles, as we call them, provide an attentive setting in which every voice is honored, nurtured, and celebrated. We welcome published writers, and writers working toward publication, in our circles. That said, our focus is on process. We believe writing and sharing in a non-competitive space enhances our art as well as our creative lives.

All of our programs provide structure for both generative/exploratory writing and the development of projects over time. We teach deep listening and ways of responding that support each writer’s authority to ask for what they need. We also help people expand their capacity for giving the kind of feedback that has been asked for.

We welcome published writers, and writers working toward publication, in our circles. That said, our focus is on process. We believe writing and sharing in a non-competitive space enhance our art as well as our creative lives.

Outreach / Arts Education

Please provide information about your outreach or arts education program(s).:

Since 2006, volunteers have conducted regular writing circles with women incarcerated at the Monroe County Correctional Center in downtown Bloomington, Ind. The program provides a safe space to explore writing as a rehabilitative and community building tool. Since its inception, the program has served well over 400 women.

Other outreach collaborations over the years have included: Stonebelt, Monroe County CASA, Bloomington Hospital Hospice, Olcott Center Cancer Family Support Group, Head Injury Support Group, Fibromyalgia Support Group, Meadowood Retirement Center, Circles® Initiative, Girls Inc., and Mental Health America (formerly The Mental Health Alliance).

We offer group consultations and non-profit partnerships. Organizations who wish to use writing as a tool for change may benefit from a facilitated approach and a unique process to engage people in the questions of their lives and the lives of their organizations. Writing in a safe, professionally facilitated circle connects groups with questions common to the group.

Each writing circle can be adapted to a multitude of settings to bring about personal and group clarity and creative inspiration.

Whether you wish to use a writing circle to lead your organization in new directions or help your consumers or staff gain deeper understanding of themselves and their gifts, Women Writing for (a) Change Bloomington is eager to work with you.
